SoftWave Therapy for Chronic Pain: What Conditions Does It Treat and How Does It Work?
When the usual approaches stop working
A lot of people who come to us for SoftWave Therapy have already been through the rounds. They've tried rest, physiotherapy, anti-inflammatories, steroid injections. Maybe things improved for a while, then went back to how they were. Or maybe nothing really helped at all.
Chronic pain has a way of wearing people down — not just physically but mentally too. When you've been dealing with the same shoulder issue or heel pain for a year or more, it's easy to start believing that this is just how things are going to be. We see that resignation a lot, and it's one of the reasons we invested in SoftWave Therapy at Cayucos Chiropractic. For many of these patients, it has been the thing that finally moved the needle.
So what actually is SoftWave Therapy?
SoftWave uses acoustic waves — sound waves, essentially — to stimulate the body's own healing processes at a cellular level. It's a technology that has been used in sports medicine and clinical settings for years, and it works on a principle that is different from most pain treatments: instead of reducing inflammation directly or blocking pain signals, it prompts your body to do what it's designed to do — heal itself.
The treatment is non-invasive. There are no injections, no incisions, no downtime. A session typically runs between 5 and 10 minutes. Most patients describe the sensation as a mild pulsing or tapping — occasionally a little uncomfortable over particularly sensitive areas, but nothing that most people find difficult to tolerate.
What does it actually do inside the body?
When the acoustic waves reach damaged tissue, several things happen. Blood flow to the area increases, which brings oxygen and nutrients that are essential for repair. Growth factors are released. Stem cells are activated and drawn to the injury site. Chronic inflammation starts to settle. Scar tissue that has built up over time begins to break down.
For injuries that have been present for a long time, this matters a lot. Chronic injuries often sit in a kind of stuck state — the body has stopped actively trying to repair them. SoftWave essentially restarts that healing process.
What conditions does SoftWave Therapy treat?
The list is broader than most people expect. The conditions we treat most commonly at Cayucos Chiropractic include:
Plantar fasciitis — persistent heel pain that is often at its worst first thing in the morning. This is one of the conditions that responds particularly well to SoftWave.
Frozen shoulder — reduced range of motion with pain through the shoulder joint. Conventional treatment can be slow, and SoftWave helps address the tissue changes that drive the restriction.
Rotator cuff injuries — whether from a sports injury or gradual overuse, rotator cuff problems can be stubborn. SoftWave works well here, especially combined with chiropractic care for the surrounding structures.
Sciatica and chronic back pain — alongside spinal adjustments, SoftWave can help calm the inflammation around nerve roots and damaged discs.
Achilles tendinopathy — a common and often frustrating injury, especially for runners and active people. SoftWave has strong evidence behind it for tendon injuries specifically.
Tennis elbow and golfer's elbow — repetitive strain injuries around the elbow that often resist standard treatment.
Knee pain and meniscus issues — including osteoarthritis-related pain and sports injuries.
Scar tissue — both internal scar tissue that restricts movement and external scars from surgery or injury.
This is not an exhaustive list. If you have a chronic pain condition and you're wondering whether SoftWave might help, the best thing is to come in for an assessment and we can give you a clear answer based on your specific situation.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on the condition and how long it has been present. Acute or relatively recent injuries may respond in 3 to 6 sessions. More established chronic conditions typically require 6 to 10 sessions, sometimes more. We reassess as we go and are always transparent about how things are progressing.
One of the questions we get asked a lot is about cost. We would rather you call us directly for that conversation — pricing depends on the treatment plan and we prefer to talk you through your options properly rather than post a number that doesn't reflect the full picture.
One of very few providers on the Central Coast
SoftWave Therapy is not yet widely available in this area. Cayucos Chiropractic is one of the only clinics offering it across Cayucos, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, and the broader Central Coast region. For patients who have previously had to travel for this kind of treatment, or who didn't know it was available locally, that matters.
We made the decision to bring SoftWave into the practice because we saw how well it worked for conditions that chiropractic alone sometimes couldn't fully resolve. Used alongside adjustments when appropriate, it expands what we are able to offer — and the results we've seen in our patients have confirmed it was the right call.
In the 14 years that I have been providing chiropractic care to communities across California and Central America, I have not seen anything like what SoftWave accomplishes. What chiropractic, massage and acupuncture cannot resolve SoftWave has been the answer for me. Not only does it help with acute pain but also with chronic pain which is what really turned me on to it. My first patient I used Softwave on was eye opening. A recent high school graduate going into college to play football with hopes to make it big. The issue was he had a high hamstring injury that would not go away after two years. Sitting or standing for more than 10 minutes would cause pain and discomfort. He was concerned about reinjury, performance decreases and his upcoming training combine that was in two weeks time. After one treatment he didn’t notice much, maybe a slight decrease in pain. After his second treatment the pain was down by 70%. After his third treatment his pain was completely gone and he was off to combine. When he returned from a vigorous week at combine traveling to Utah and back he came in for a chiropractic tune up. His hamstring was a non-issue and has finally healed after two years of lingering pain. SoftWave gave him the confidence to perform at his best without hesitation and set him up for a successful run in high level football with NFL hopes.
